re: this post, would you perhaps be able to reword it? i understand the words you're using individually, and i think i might kind of get what you're trying to say, but it's just one very long sentence and so i'm having trouble parsing it! (wait--i just reread it. initial question canceled, mostly--now: what alternatives might we have available to us?) and what does this section: "it feels all too easy to jump from that to then just stymieing our ability to actually describe the textual violences necessary to the discursive construction of that normativity in the first place" mean, exactly? thank you as always for running this blog. :-)
What Iâm describing is a critical phenomenon wherein people will approach (usually canonical) horror texts which reify hegemony by âidentifyingâ with the monster who is generally figured in terms of alterity in some capacity; by extricating, for example, a queer narrative out of what is in fact a homophobic one, and treating this as something of a âreclamatoryâ practice in which one ârelatesâ to that which the text figures as monstrous. The most common instance of this which I see is peopleâs discussion of Carmilla as an erotic lesbian romance; other examples include Dracula, or Frankenstein, or the socially currency invested in the idea of a âmadwoman in the atticâ (ie. Jane Eyre). Â
I donât think this is like, a practice that we need to do away with entirely, lol â but I do think that a) there are marginalised writers + filmmakers who are making horror with actual teeth, with actual radical edge, and we donât need to keep pretending like this approach of reclamation-through-identification with a monster in a v normative work is all we have available to us when politically subversive horror does very much exist, and b) this critical practice is often vvv limited in its discursive scope, and tends to lack the kind of materialist analysis that I would consider necessary in talking about literatures of alterity/marginality/violence.
When I talked about stymieing our ability to describe the textual violences necessary to the discursive constructions of that normativity in the first place, I meant that overfocusing on these texts as âreclaimedâ articulations of an essentially queer (or otherwise âotheredâ) imaginary can inhibit our ability, as critics, to describe how those texts in fact do not think of their monstrous figures as worthy of a sympathetic or appreciative narrative. I mentioned Carmilla above â we can talk about Carmilla as erotically lesbian, sure, but how far down the line in talking about it as a Queer Narrative do we lose track of the fact that the text itself asserts the sexual norms of white Christian hegemony to necessarily succeed over the perversion of the corruptive, predatory lesbian, or as an Anglo-Irish work positing Carmilla as an Irish woman (and thus a contaminant threat to Anglo-Irish society)? At what point in adulating Dracula as articulating a particular form of queer, effeminate Jewishness destabilising and threatening Jonathan and Minaâs persistent heterosexuality do we lose track of Dracula as having grown out of the fear that the new waves of Jewish immigration in Londonâs East End were vampiric sources of contagion, or its possible relationship to the antisemitic smears that grew out of the Jack the Ripper murders? Or like, taking Bertha Mason (or âthe madwoman in the attic,â because truly, v few people using this phrase are actually thinking about Bertha Mason lol) as a kind of feminist paragon â at what point do we begin to overlook the fact that Jane Eyre is a v racist text?
These arenât necessarily contradictory approaches â like, for example, you can talk about âidentifyingâ with Dracula as emblematic of British Jewish assimilation and the discontents thereof whilst also talking about Dracula as an antisemitic text, even if the analysis in the former isnât especially coherent â but the focus of the âidentificationâ treatment is often incredibly limited in its scope, and those limitations can often be detrimental to oneâs ability to talk frankly and honestly about what a text actually says and does. A very good example such limitations is that of Frankenstein; an identification with Frankensteinâs monster as an entrypoint for textual analysis obfuscates the way in which Frankenstein constructed a discursive template by which the ameliorationist argument against the immediate abolition of slavery could be argued for. (The linked post lays this out v clearly, but the cited source is Mary Mulveyâ Robertsâ âMary Shelley, Frankenstein, and Slavery,â in Dangerous Bodies: Historicising the Gothic Corporeal). What I basically mean is, when we talk about relating to, identifying with, âreclaimingâ the monster, we have to have a real grasp on what it is weâre trying to impose such a practice on, and what the actual substance of the source text has to say for itself. Iâm not one for assuming a text as a body with a set of metaphysical properties that we as critics are tasked to find â I think the relationship between text and reader ought to be dialectical â but part of that dialectical process means situating the text in its material social context and responding appropriately.

I'd Like to Adopt These Side Characters, Please (And Also Make One Arbitrarily To Appease The Vibes)
So, I've already mentioned my plans to write something for our dear single-minute-of-screentime-boys from the FNAF movie. And, as per usual for me, posting some headcanons will help the ideas flow for that WIP. . .
___
Jack Samar
His passengers always are, in fact, "the weirdos." It just seems to happen without fail. College partygoers crashing down from adrenaline (among other things) highs, random drifters that could all probably be in the same cult if you pay attention to detail, that one guy who's all too happy to take advantage of the open secret that the ducks in the park are free. . .Most of the time, it's nothing too serious. But he's still got some very interesting stories here and there.
He's one of the best drivers in town. And that's not just due to his job as a cabbie; he knows how dangerous driving can be, so he takes pride in making sure his skills are sharp. (Seriously, if you've ever driven a car, then you know it's practically a miracle to see someone else on the road who actually knows what they're doing.)
He has a steel-trap memory; he knows every part of town like the back of his hand. Constantly driving on various routes just has that effect on you.
He's a bit of a rescuer. As in, if he happens to see a stray animal while driving, then he'll park, coax said animal into the car, and then drop it off at at the local shelter. If you have him drive you from Point A to Point B, there's a good chance you'll spot a scruffy-looking cat or dog riding shotgun.
If he isn't too tired at the end of his shifts, he'll drive over to Sparky's for a late-night snack before heading home to rest. Both he and Ness are good listeners, so a decent chunk their banter is dedicated to venting about sucky patrons.
He's certainly aware of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzaria, as well as the rumors surrounding it, but he never really bothered with the place. And he doesn't plan to start bothering with it after seeing Golden Freddy in the back of his taxi.
Although. . .well, that occurrence might have made him start weighing the pros and cons of trying to get more information out of Mason. (He's very much hesitant about it, of course. Yeah, he was the one to help Mason out, but the assumption of Mason's experience with Freddy's is still far from pleasant.)
(Yes, his name is a pun inspired by Cory's samurai joke. What did you expect from me?)
___
Ness Aeoruhndbt-Ultendera
"Ness" is only his nickname, but he doesn't plan on revealing his full name anytime soon. Not even to his friends, for whatever reason. There's also a bit of an inside joke about how his surname is too long to actually fit on his nametag. (Yes, that gibberish my personal idea for his surname. I spent way more time working on it than I probably should have because I was determined to make a weird/funny reference, so leave me alone, okay?!)
He's been in the restaurant business ever since he was a kid; he's worked in several different joints before Sparky's. Coming from a family of foodies, he truly enjoys what he does, no matter how small-scale. Sure, some days are worse than others, but that's just life.
Similarly to Jack, it's not that uncommon for him to serve some strange characters. (Hell, sometimes the strange characters in question will wave down Jack's cab right after they've finished their meal at Sparky's.) Nothing usually comes of it, but he's still more than observant enough to pick up on certain oddities.
He makes a genuine effort to be polite and outgoing with customers. But make no mistake, he absolutely can, has, and will verbally curb-stomp someone if they push him or his coworkers too far. (Aunt Jane was lucky that her jab was minor. Plus, Ness just had other customers to focus on.)
It's no surprise that he LOVES conspiracy theories. Now, he knows which crackpot rabbit-holes to avoid, but he's still the type to listen to true crime podcasts almost religiously. In a way, researching and brainstorming is a comfort to him.
He's actually developed legitimate friendships with a specific few of Sparky's regulars. (Jack and Mason are part of this camp.) In fact, if there aren't many other customers that need tending to, he'll sit down and chat with them while they eat.
While he's perky during the day, he's still a night owl. It helps that his regular-friends almost always stop by in the late hours. (This has also paved the way for him to become a bit of a coffee-addict, but not to the point of concern. Speaking of which: he takes great joy in people's reactions to his argument that coffee is actually a type of soup.)
Oh, and that rubber-chicken-head-pencil-topper? Its name is Fabio, and Ness has been carrying it for several years now. He can't remember where/when/how he came into possession of Fabio, but you can pry it from his cold, dead hands.
___
Mason Kingsley
I wasn't originally planning to make a technical fanego for the FNAF movie. But after I learned that Mark was intended to make a cameo, I was intrigued. Thus, Masonâaka Trauma Boiâwas born. His inclusion here (and in that future story I mentioned) is basically just a "What if?" scenario. As in, A. What if Mark had actually played the role of that first nightguard in the movie, and B. what if he'd actually survived his ordeal at Freddy's. . .?
Please read "survived," as "escaped by the skin of his teeth with grievous injuries and is now sort of dead inside."
Fittingly enough, Jack happened to by passing by when Mason fled the restaurant. It's pretty damn easy to stop for a guy who's covered in blood and cradling a broken arm and screaming for help.
After Jack drove Mason to the hospital, the two of them made an effort to stay in touch. Their respective patronage to Sparky's helps out with that.
Time passed, as it tends to do, and Mason eventually recovered. Keep in mind that the recovery was physical; he's still having night-terrors about animatronic monsters. Just the mention of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzaria will make him start shaking and murmuring under his breath, pale and tense.
He absolutely refuses to talk about the incident in detail, but it left some very obvious scars on his neck, chest, and arms. He's constantly trying to keep said scars covered.
Silver lining: shortly after recovering, Mason was able to adopt a therapy pet. Enter Checkers, a golden retriever who's just the best emotionally-tuned girl and is always by his side.
He stops by Sparky's for dinner once or twice per week. He wasn't too receptive to Ness' chitchat at first, but by now they have a solid friendship. (It started when Ness "accidentally" brought out a large side of bacon with Mason's order. Checkers most certainly appreciated that, so it's become a small tradition between them.)
(And just to clarify, because I KNOW someone is gonna read this and take it the wrong way: I'm NOT using this to try and whine about Mark's absence in the movie. It's really not too hard to understand that his own Iron Lung project has kept him INCREDIBLY BUSY. It's an amazing accomplishment for him, so of course it should take priority over a cameo in FNAF.)

If you like music like that tiktok, do you have any recs?
I'm not gonna stick just to the ~sensual lady singer, wolfish male "rapper" songs but I guess I can give recs of the sort of same energy music from that era, like music that puts you in the headspace to accept that into your heart.
But if you want artists that fit the "sweet lady/sexy man" dichotomy, just listen to Aqua or Toybox. For aqua, fuck Barbie Girl, try "Roses are Red" or "Lollipop (Candy Man)" and for Toybox "Tarzan & Jane" or "Best Friend"
Or just look up DDR music
This list goes from closer to the request and then kinda hits scatter shot of just "90s and 2000s dance music... or songs tht remind me of 90s and 2000s dance music" so... whoops
"Dream a Dream" Captain Jack
Vengaboys. Come on now. I shouldn't even hae to tell you which songs
"Beijo" Morandi
"Electropop" Jupiter Rising
"Bumble Bee" Bambee
"Perfect (Exceeder)" MAson, Princess Superstar
"I see Girls (Tom Neville Radio Edit)" Studio B
"Distance (M-Flo Remix)" Hikaru Utada
"Candy Pop" Heartsdales
"What is Love" Haddaway (it's a meme but also it still fucks)
"Be My Lover" La Bouche
"Just About Enough" Sarina Paris
"You're my Angel" or "Heaven" DJ Sammy
"Kylie" Akcent
"Ike Ike" Hinoi Team
"Summerlove" S-Connection (also try the Scorccio Edit)
"Butterfly" Smile.Dk
"Chocolate Disco" Perfume
"Hit My Heart" Benassi Bros
"Come... (Into my Dream)" Foggy
This one is a stretch but it's one of my faves of all time "Starlight" The Supermen Lovers
"Temptation" Harisu
"House Baby (Verano Radio Edit)" C-Bool
"Daddy DJ" Daddy DJ OR "Dota" by basshunter (OR "boten anna" by basshunter)
"Time to Rock (Roberto Molinaro Radio Mix)" Gabry Ponte or "80s Stars" by Eiffel 65
"Mr. Saxobeat" Alexandra Stan
"At the End" or "Rapture" iiO or "Pressure (Alesso Radio Edit)" by Nadia Ali
"Believe" Nami Tamaki
"Somnambulist" BT
"Anima Libera (Sweet Edit)" Emi
"Bad Boy" Cascada
"Call on Me" or "Generate" Eric Prydz
"Out of Touch" Uniting Nations
Obviously, songs like "Better off Alone" and "Sandstorm" don't need to be said here
"I Could be the One" Avicii, Nicky Romero
"Gotta Get Thru This (D'N'D Remix)" Daniel Beddingfield
"Destination Calabria" Alex Gaudino
"Fancy Footwork" Chromeo
"Angels (Love is the Answer)" Morandi
That was jus ta fast skim through my music and whatever reminded me of ~that era but again it's a veeeery scattershot look

Hello hope ur well. sorry to be so nosy but a goodreads friend liked your jane eyre review onto my timeline and I read this: âjean rhys takes this up but she does it badlyâ Iâm dying to know what this means (sorry in advance if u have talked abt it before)
From the review in question:
i think what caught me the most this time around is charlotte brontë's v clear preoccupation with colonial holdings and their relationship to her notions of english girlhood; through bertha of course (the fear that a white woman from a jamaican former slaveowning family might somehow be tainted by her proximity to foreignness + Blackness and put at a remove from ~englishness by the fact is ... yeah. jean rhys takes this up but she takes it up badly so whatever.)
I was referring to Wide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhysâ 1966 novel wherein she revisits Bertha Mason as Antoinette Cosway and traces her marriage to Rochester and eventual suicide at Thornfield Hall in a manner that intends to give texture and clarity and depth to a character that Brontëâs text was thought to have discarded.
WSS is like ⊠wildly racist, frankly. Antoinette Cosway is from a white Jamaican family impoverished by 1833 Slavery Abolition Act, and lives on their sugar plantation until the newly emancipated Black Jamaican populace burn it down and kill her disabled brother. Rhys opens the novel with the suggestion that Antoinette and her family are isolated from other white people in Jamaica due to their poverty, highlighting the preservation of their whiteness as being a process of retaining property ownership in order to set the stage for the novel's marriage market plots; Antoinette and her mother each enter into abusive marriages with intent to restore their prosperity (which, ofc, would in effect restore their whiteness). Throughout, the central concern of the text is the inaccessibility of whiteness proper that would alleviate Antoinette's suffering, but this is never matched with a serious recourse to interrogate the Cosways' position as white Jamaican slaveowners; the sympathy that the novel intends to generate for Brontë's character sits very badly with me against the knowledge that that process of narrative construction rests on a) slavery and b) a relationship to the novel's Black characters that at best relegates them to secondary positions in relation to Antoinette and at worst paints them as aggressors on par with the white upper classes who remained prosperous post-emancipation.
Related to this current of racism running through the text is the fact that Rhys doesnât really take up the issue in Jane Eyre that I pointed out in the original review, ie. that Brontë repeatedly appeals to Englishness as a desired state and relies on proximity to racialised, colonised people as a shorthand for inferiority and incivility. Bertha Mason, whilst somewhat sympathetic in Brontëâs text, is wayward, promiscuous, unpredictable, animalistic, 'dark' and 'discoloured,' and these are properties ascribed to her on the basis of the proximity she is given to Blackness (she is from Jamaica and it's possible to read her as being mixed race, certainly subject to an anxiety of racial impurity, though Rhys' Antoinette is white). Antoinette as a character remains constructed around the notion that her proximity to Blackness simply by virtue of having grown up in Jamaica is an 'othering' mechanism; the novel is frustrated that Antoinette can't be 'white' in Rochester's eyes, not that Antoinette's relationship to whiteness is one defined first and foremost over her family having owned slaves. Like, the text provides sympathy and interiority to Antoinette/Bertha, but it doesn't ... challenge Brontë's initial assertions in any real way.
WSS also has pretty significant currency as a âpostcolonial textâ at least in the UK (I donât know about elsewhere), which imo speaks to the incoherence of that category, lmao. I was introduced to WSS as a âpostcolonial textâ at undergrad on a module that essentially aimed to trace the history of âthe novelâ and thus appealed to WSS as the synecdoche of âpostcolonial literature,â despite the fact that Rhys was very much a white woman whose family owned a plantation in Dominica. In 2022, it was put on a list of âCommonwealth literatureâ celebrating the Queen's jubileeâitâs a fucking wild list and a great example of the imperialist nostalgia that shapes the culture in this country, but like, Rhys being on there alongside Black and brown authors (and also other white British writers who upheld the colonial regime eg. Anthony Burgess and Muriel Spark) indicates this flattening of colonial subjectivity into one lump category of âcitizenshipâ wherein Rhys can make as much sense as a âpostcolonialâ âCommonwealthâ author as can, say, NgÅ©gÄ© wa Thiong'o or Chinua Achebe or Arundhati Roy &c. &c. I guess WSS just feels especially egregious for how easily its racism can be obfuscated as it gets folded into this category of literature that we might assume to be about and for racialised/colonised people.
(nb. I have only read WSS once, six years ago, so if Iâve forgotten plot details then like ⊠sorry lol. I remember enough to know why it pissed me off to no end at the time sksksksk)
#ask#racism cw#reading the wiki for this book and seeing the leaps some scholars have made to try and read it as anticolonial....is....wild.......
